She taught biology in various schools in Hong Kong until her retirement in 1998. During her years of teaching\, she cr eated "free evening classes to provide education to migrant workers with the help of some of her students. She also set up some community projects to help children with disabilities\, especially the visually impaired. I n 1996\, Nicole Sicard received the "Best Teacher of the Year" award. To this day\, she remains the only non-Chinese teacher to have received this award in Hong Kong. In addition to teaching\, she has traveled a lot thr oughout Asia. She went to Laos\, for example\, to help refugees fleeing t he bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. She also tutored children fro m the Tibetan Children’s Villages in Dharamsala\, India. She also travele d to the Philippines (Palawan 1978-1984) and Mongolia (2001 to 2010) wher e she got involved in charity work. Since her retirement in 1998\, she al so got involved with the Nepalese association Concern\, which aims to pro vide education to street children. In 2011\, she created with her friend Sarbendra Pachhai\, Mayaa Nepal\, which took over the activities of Conce rn. In 2016\, she founded Mayaa Hong Kong\, not only to raise funds for M ayaa Nepal\, but also to help the underprivileged children of Hong Kong. Soon after it’s creation Mayaa Hong Kong was given the status of an NGO w ith Chapter 88 tax exemption advantages. Mayaa France followed in 2018 al so with the aim of raising funds. Thus\, Mayaa became Mayaa World to refl ect the global reach.
